World Refugee Day

Whoever. Whatever. Whenever. Everyone has the right to seek safety.

About

World Refugee Day on June 20 honours the strength, courage, and perseverance of millions of refugees who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict, or violence. Over 100 million people worldwide are currently displaced — the highest number in recorded history. The UNHCR uses the day to build understanding of the refugee experience and foster empathy and respect for refugees' rights and dignity.

History

The United Nations General Assembly designated June 20 as World Refugee Day in December 2000 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention. The Convention defines who is a refugee and outlines the rights of displaced persons and the legal obligations of states to protect them. Events on the day shifted from marking an anniversary to celebrating the resilience of refugees themselves.

Cultural Context

US United States

The US resettles more refugees than most countries, but refugee policy has become deeply polarized. World Refugee Day brings together American volunteers, resettlement agencies, and advocacy groups to humanise the refugee experience and push back against xenophobic narratives.

KR South Korea

South Korea has a relatively low refugee recognition rate despite being a signatory to the Refugee Convention. The day prompts civil society campaigns for more generous refugee policies and better integration support for the small refugee community already in Korea.

JP Japan

Japan accepts very few refugees — the country's recognition rate is among the lowest among developed nations. World Refugee Day sparks intense public debate about Japan's humanitarian obligations, identity, and the future of a country grappling with population decline.
