International Day of Peace
Committed to peace — in every sense of the word.
About
The International Day of Peace — also known as World Peace Day — is observed annually on September 21. The United Nations invites all nations and peoples to honour a cessation of hostilities, and to otherwise mark the occasion through education and public awareness. Each year the UN sets a theme related to advancing global peace.
History
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly. The first celebration was held in September 1982. In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate September 21 as a permanent date for the International Day of Peace, shifting from the variable third Tuesday of September.
Where It's Observed
Cultural Context
US United States
The US observes Peace Day through UN-affiliated events, campus vigils, and international relations organisations. Given the US's role in global conflicts, the day carries both civic and political weight, and anti-war and peacebuilding communities organise significant events.
KR South Korea
Situated between global powers with an unresolved Korean War armistice, South Korea observes Peace Day with particular poignancy. Events focus on Korean unification hopes, diplomacy, North-South reconciliation, and inter-Korean cultural exchanges.
JP Japan
Japan's pacifist constitution makes International Peace Day deeply meaningful. Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors often participate in ceremonies, and the day reinforces Japan's commitment to nuclear abolition, arms control, and peaceful diplomacy.
