World Children's Day

For every child, a future filled with possibility.

About

World Children's Day is celebrated on November 20 — the anniversary of the date the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. UNICEF uses the day to promote children's rights, welfare, and well-being worldwide and advocates for access to education, healthcare, and protection from exploitation.

History

The UN first established Universal Children's Day on November 20, 1954, encouraging countries to institute a day for children's fraternity and understanding. On November 20, 1959, the Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted. Thirty years later to the day, the Convention on the Rights of the Child — the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history — was adopted in 1989.
