World Humanitarian Day is observed on August 19 each year to honour aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service and to galvanise support for people affected by crises worldwide. The #WorldHumanitarianDay campaign mobilises millions in solidarity with those who suffer through conflict, disaster, and extreme poverty.
History
The date commemorates the August 19, 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, which killed 22 people including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The United Nations General Assembly designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day in 2008.
