International Day of Education

Education is the foundation of every sustainable, peaceful society.

About

The International Day of Education, observed on January 24, celebrates the role of education in peace and development. The UN sets a new theme each year to draw attention to a specific educational challenge — from learning recovery post-pandemic to education in crisis zones. Around 244 million children worldwide are still out of school, making this day a call to action for governments, NGOs, and communities alike.

History

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24 as International Day of Education in December 2018, through Resolution 73/25. The decision recognised that without inclusive and equitable quality education, countries cannot achieve gender equality, break the cycle of poverty, or build peaceful societies. The first observance took place in 2019.

Cultural Context

US United States

The US marks the day with debates about education funding inequality, school choice policy, and higher education affordability. Organisations like Teach For America and Khan Academy highlight access gaps between underfunded and well-resourced school districts.

KR South Korea

South Korea's world-leading education outcomes make this day a moment to discuss the pressures of the education system — the intense hagwon (private tutoring academy) culture, university entrance exam stress, and calls for a more balanced approach to learning.

JP Japan

Japan uses the day to address declining university enrollment, rural school closures due to demographic decline, and the push to incorporate English-language and critical-thinking education into a traditionally rote-learning system.
