World Book Day

A tribute to books, authors, and the joy of reading.

About

World Book and Copyright Day (commonly called World Book Day) is celebrated on April 23 each year to promote reading, publishing, and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. The date is symbolic — April 23 is both the birth and death date of William Shakespeare, and also the birth or death date of Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

History

The idea originated in Catalonia, Spain, where Sant Jordi's Day (April 23) traditionally involves giving roses and books to loved ones. A Spanish writer named Vicente Clavel Andrés proposed a broader Book Day in the 1920s. UNESCO officially proclaimed April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995.
