World Suicide Prevention Day
Every life matters. Reach out. Listen. It can make all the difference.
About
World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 provides a global commitment and action to prevent suicides. More than 700,000 people die by suicide every year — one every 40 seconds. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) uses the day to reduce stigma, promote help-seeking, and connect those in need with crisis resources.
History
World Suicide Prevention Day was co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and established by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in 2003. The annual theme framework 'Creating Hope Through Action' has guided the day since 2021. Suicide prevention has moved from a taboo topic to a mainstream public health priority in many countries.
Where It's Observed
Cultural Context
US United States
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the US, with over 47,000 deaths annually. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (988) provides crisis support. World Suicide Prevention Day amplifies campaigns targeting men, veterans, and LGBTQ+ youth — all disproportionately affected.
KR South Korea
South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates among OECD countries, particularly among adolescents and the elderly. The day drives campaigns to reduce stigma around mental health help-seeking, improve crisis response services, and address the underlying pressures of academic and workplace culture.
JP Japan
Japan has made significant progress in reducing suicide rates from a peak of 34,427 in 2003 to around 21,000 in recent years, but the numbers remain high. The day focuses on men's mental health, isolation among elderly populations, and workplace mental health policies.
