World Happiness Day
Happiness is a fundamental human goal — and it can be measured.
About
International Day of Happiness is observed on March 20 each year to recognise the importance of happiness and wellbeing as universal human goals. The United Nations uses the day to publish the World Happiness Report — a global ranking of countries by their citizens' self-reported happiness levels, factoring in GDP, social support, life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. The report consistently reveals that Nordic countries lead the happiness rankings.
History
Bhutan, the small Himalayan kingdom that famously measures Gross National Happiness alongside GDP, proposed an international day of happiness to the UN. The General Assembly adopted the resolution in June 2012, and the first International Day of Happiness was celebrated on March 20, 2013. The World Happiness Report has been published annually since 2012.
Where It's Observed
Cultural Context
US United States
The US regularly ranks mid-table in the World Happiness Report despite being the world's largest economy — a finding that sparks annual debate about income inequality, social safety nets, and work-life balance. The day prompts discussions about what makes Americans genuinely happy versus wealthy.
KR South Korea
South Korea scores below many expectations in happiness rankings given its economic success, due to high academic pressure, long work hours, and demographic anxieties. The day has spurred government 'happiness policy' initiatives and workplace wellbeing programs.
JP Japan
Japan similarly struggles in happiness rankings relative to its prosperity. Issues of social isolation, karoshi (overwork death), and a rapidly aging population frame the day's discussions. The concept of ikigai (reason for being) is often invoked as Japan's cultural approach to happiness.
