World Soil Day
Soil is the silent foundation of all life — we stand on it but rarely think of it.
About
World Soil Day on December 5 focuses on the importance of healthy soil and advocates for sustainable soil management. Soil is a fundamental natural resource — it filters water, stores carbon, produces 95% of the world's food, and hosts a quarter of all Earth's biodiversity. Yet soil degradation is accelerating: about 33% of the world's soils are moderately to severely degraded through erosion, nutrient depletion, acidification, and pollution.
History
World Soil Day was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences in 2002 and officially established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 2014. The date December 5 was chosen to coincide with the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, who championed sustainable soil management throughout his reign.
Where It's Observed
Cultural Context
US United States
The US Dust Bowl of the 1930s remains the nation's most vivid reminder of soil degradation's consequences. World Soil Day highlights regenerative agriculture as an emerging movement, promoting cover cropping, no-till farming, and composting as tools for soil health restoration.
KR South Korea
South Korea's intensive agriculture and urbanisation have strained soil quality in farming regions. World Soil Day promotes sustainable farming education and connects to Korea's growing interest in urban farming, composting programmes, and fermented soil microbiome research.
JP Japan
Japan's rice paddy culture is deeply connected to soil management traditions cultivated over millennia. World Soil Day celebrates Japan's expertise in fermented soil amendments and sustainable paddy management, while highlighting challenges from aging farming populations and land abandonment.
