World Rivers Day
Rivers are the arteries of our planet — they need our protection.
About
World Rivers Day on the fourth Sunday of September (observed September 22 in many years) celebrates rivers worldwide and increases public awareness of the importance of rivers in our lives. Rivers provide water for drinking, agriculture, and industry; support extraordinary biodiversity; drive hydroelectric power; and have cradled human civilisations throughout history. Yet rivers are under severe threat from pollution, dams, over-extraction, and climate change.
History
World Rivers Day was founded by river conservationist Mark Angelo in 2005, following a United Nations initiative. The inaugural event was inspired by the United Nations World Water Day celebrations and Angelo's decades of river conservation work in British Columbia, Canada. The day has grown to include events in over 70 countries.
Where It's Observed
Cultural Context
US United States
American rivers including the Colorado, Mississippi, and Columbia face intense pressures from agriculture, dams, and climate-driven water scarcity. World Rivers Day highlights advocacy for dam removal (a growing movement), watershed restoration, and the rights of indigenous communities whose cultures centre on rivers.
KR South Korea
South Korea's 4 Major Rivers Restoration Project remains controversial — World Rivers Day prompts ongoing debate about the ecological impact of river engineering and the recovery of the Han, Nakdong, Geum, and Yeongsan rivers.
JP Japan
Japan's rivers are short and fast-moving due to its mountainous terrain, and flood management is a constant challenge. World Rivers Day celebrates Japan's satoyama landscapes where rivers and human communities intertwine, and advocates for natural flood management approaches.
