World Oceans Day

Our oceans, our future — protecting the blue heart of the planet.

About

World Oceans Day is observed on June 8 each year to celebrate the ocean and raise awareness of the crucial role it plays in sustaining life on Earth. The ocean produces over 50% of the world's oxygen, absorbs about 30% of the CO₂ produced by humans, and is home to most of Earth's biodiversity. Yet overfishing, plastic pollution, and climate change pose major threats.

History

The concept was proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro by the Government of Canada. The United Nations officially recognized June 8 as World Oceans Day in 2008. Since then, it has grown into a major event with a global focus theme set each year by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.

South Korea's extensive coastline and significant fishing industry make ocean health a major concern. The day prompts campaigns on sustainable seafood, reducing marine plastic waste from coastal cities, and protecting the iconic tidal flat ecosystems of the western coast.

JP Japan

Japan's deep cultural and culinary relationship with the ocean gives World Oceans Day special significance. Fishing communities, sushi culture advocates, and marine conservationists all participate in awareness events highlighting the need to protect Japan's surrounding seas.
