World Elephant Day

The world's largest land animals are in crisis — and they need our help now.

About

World Elephant Day on August 12 raises global awareness about the plight of both African and Asian elephants. Elephants face devastating threats from poaching for ivory, habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and in some regions, mistreatment in captivity. African elephant populations have declined by over 70% in the past century. Asian elephants, with only around 40,000 remaining in the wild, are classified as Endangered by the IUCN.

History

World Elephant Day was co-founded by Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand in 2012. The day was officially launched on August 12, 2012, with a film narrated by William Shatner. Since then it has grown into a major conservation campaign supported by over 100 wildlife organisations globally.

Cultural Context

US United States

American zoos and wildlife organisations use the day to campaign against ivory trade and support African conservation efforts. US trophy hunting regulations and ivory import bans are debated through the prism of elephant conservation.

KR South Korea

Elephant conservation resonates in South Korea through zoos, nature documentaries, and growing eco-tourism interest. Korean NGOs partner with African and Asian conservation projects, and World Elephant Day raises consumer awareness about ivory products.

JP Japan

Japan was until recently one of the world's largest legal ivory markets, making World Elephant Day a focal point for conservation advocates calling for Japan to end its domestic ivory trade. Changing public attitudes, particularly among younger Japanese, have shifted the conversation.
