International Museum Day

Museums are important means of cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

About

International Museum Day is celebrated on or around May 18 each year to raise awareness of the role museums play as important means of cultural exchange, enrichment, and development of mutual understanding. Hundreds of museums worldwide open their doors for free or host special events on this day.

History

International Museum Day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 and is now observed in over 150 countries. A new theme is chosen each year — from 'Museums for Equality' to 'Museums, Sustainability and Well-being' — reflecting evolving debates about the role of museums in contemporary society.
