International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

Honouring the diversity, cultures, and rights of indigenous peoples worldwide.

About

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed on August 9 each year to recognise and protect the rights of the world's estimated 476 million indigenous people across 90 countries. Indigenous communities are custodians of much of the Earth's remaining biodiversity and are at the forefront of climate impacts, while often facing discrimination, dispossession, and denial of basic rights.

History

The date marks the day in 1982 when the UN's Working Group on Indigenous Populations held its first meeting. The General Assembly first proclaimed the day in December 1994. The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues coordinates the day, choosing an annual theme addressing treaty rights, language preservation, land rights, or other pressing issues.
