International Day for Biological Diversity
Biodiversity is life — every species lost is a story the Earth will never tell again.
About
The International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22 focuses on the living fabric of the planet — the staggering variety of species, ecosystems, and genetic material that makes Earth habitable and resilient. Biological diversity underpins food security, medicine, clean water, climate regulation, and almost every other ecosystem service that human civilisation depends on. Yet biodiversity is declining at rates unprecedented in human history. Scientists describe a sixth mass extinction event, driven by habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, invasive species, and overexploitation. An estimated one million species face extinction in the coming decades. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) coordinates global policy responses, and the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework set a target of protecting 30% of land and oceans by 2030. May 22 is a day to understand what is at stake, celebrate the natural world, and support the policies and behaviours that can slow — and ultimately reverse — biodiversity loss.
History
The United Nations declared May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity in 2000 to raise awareness of biodiversity issues. The date commemorates the adoption of the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity on May 22, 1992. The Convention has been ratified by 196 countries and is one of the three 'Rio Conventions' alongside the UNFCCC and the UNCCD.
Where It's Observed
Cultural Context
US United States
The US, despite not ratifying the CBD, is home to extraordinary biodiversity. World Biodiversity Day prompts discussion of the Endangered Species Act, national park policy, and the tension between conservation and economic development in US environmental politics.
KR South Korea
South Korea has been engaged in biodiversity conservation as a signatory to the CBD and as host of the CBD Secretariat-affiliated Korea National Arboretum. The day spotlights Korea's own threatened species and the challenge of protecting ecosystems in a highly urbanised country.
JP Japan
Japan is a biodiversity hotspot with many endemic species. The country is a strong supporter of the CBD and has designated extensive protected areas. May 22 is used to educate the public about Japan's unique wildlife and the pressures from development and invasive species.
How to Participate
- 01Spend time in nature — a park, forest, beach, or garden — and observe the species around you
- 02Plant native species in your garden to support local pollinators and birds
- 03Reduce your consumption of products linked to deforestation
- 04Learn about the species in your region that are listed as threatened or vulnerable
