World Space Week

Space exploration is humanity's greatest collective adventure.

About

World Space Week, observed October 4–10, is the world's largest annual space event, celebrated in over 80 countries with over 8,000 events. It brings together space agencies, astronomy clubs, schools, companies, and enthusiasts to educate people about space and celebrate space science and technology. October 4 marks the anniversary of Sputnik's launch in 1957, and October 10 the signing of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967.

History

The United Nations General Assembly declared World Space Week in 1999 to be held October 4–10 each year. The week spans two landmark space milestones: the October 4, 1957 launch of Sputnik 1 — humanity's first artificial satellite — and the October 10, 1967 signing of the Outer Space Treaty, which established that space is the province of all humanity.

Cultural Context

US United States

NASA's history, the Apollo moon landings, and private companies like SpaceX make the US the emotional centre of the space exploration narrative. World Space Week in the US features events at NASA facilities, science museums, and universities celebrating American space achievement.

KR South Korea

South Korea's growing space program — including the domestically developed Nuri rocket and lunar orbiter — has generated enormous national pride. World Space Week aligns with Korea's ambitions to be a major space-faring nation, and educational events inspire the next generation of Korean space scientists.

JP Japan

JAXA's remarkable missions — including the Hayabusa asteroid sample-return missions — have made Japan a respected space power. Japanese astronauts' appearances on the ISS generate major public interest. World Space Week events connect Japan's scientific achievements to public enthusiasm for space.
