World No Tobacco Day

Every cigarette you don't smoke is a victory for your health and your future.

About

World No Tobacco Day on May 31 is observed globally to draw attention to the health risks of tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year — one every four seconds — making it the world's leading cause of preventable death. The WHO uses the day to target tobacco industry tactics, advocate for tobacco taxes, and support cessation programs worldwide.

History

The World Health Assembly first established World No Tobacco Day in 1987 through Resolution WHA40.38, initially designating April 7. The following year it was moved to May 31, 1988. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control — an international treaty adopted in 2003 — has been one of the most successful health treaties in history, ratified by 182 parties.

Cultural Context

US United States

Smoking rates in the US have fallen dramatically since the 1960s through public education, advertising bans, and indoor smoking restrictions. However, e-cigarettes and vaping among teenagers have created new public health concerns that World No Tobacco Day increasingly addresses.

KR South Korea

South Korea has high male smoking rates compared to OECD averages, though rates have been declining. Anti-smoking campaigns intensify on this day, and government tobacco tax increases are a regular policy tool. Heated tobacco products (HTPs) have become popular, complicating regulation.

JP Japan

Japan has been slower than many countries to implement comprehensive smoking bans, though regulations have tightened ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The country has significant smoking rates among men, and World No Tobacco Day presses for stronger public health measures.
