World Music Day
Music is the universal language — let it fill every street, home, and heart.
About
World Music Day (Fête de la Musique) on June 21 — the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere — is a free music celebration that began in France in 1982. On this day, professional and amateur musicians perform for free in public spaces — streets, parks, courtyards, and transit stations — filling cities with music. The event now takes place in more than 120 cities across 5 continents, making it one of the world's largest music events.
History
Fête de la Musique was inaugurated in France in 1982 under Cultural Affairs Minister Jack Lang and music director Maurice Fleuret, who proposed making music a public gift every year on the summer solstice. The concept spread internationally through French cultural institutes. The name is a double pun in French: 'fête de la musique' (music festival) sounds identical to 'faites de la musique' (make music!).
