World AIDS Day

End inequalities. End AIDS. End pandemics.

About

World AIDS Day on December 1 is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by HIV. Since the epidemic began in the early 1980s, over 40 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses. Approximately 38 million people worldwide are living with HIV today. Thanks to antiretroviral therapy, HIV-positive people can now live long, healthy lives — but access to treatment remains deeply unequal. The red ribbon is the universal symbol of HIV awareness.

History

World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, established by the World Health Organization in 1988. The day is led by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). The annual theme guides campaigns — recent themes have focused on ending AIDS by 2030 as a public health threat, a goal that requires addressing structural inequalities in healthcare access.

Cultural Context

US United States

The US was at the epicentre of the early AIDS crisis, and World AIDS Day remembers the estimated 700,000 Americans who have died. LGBTQ+ communities, communities of colour, and advocacy organisations run powerful memorial and advocacy events. Treatment access and prevention funding remain key advocacy issues.

KR South Korea

HIV/AIDS in South Korea is a topic still surrounded by stigma, despite having effective treatment access. World AIDS Day drives public campaigns to reduce stigma, promote HIV testing, and ensure non-discrimination for people living with HIV in healthcare and employment.

JP Japan

Japan has one of the lowest HIV infection rates among developed nations but also struggles with HIV stigma and low testing rates. World AIDS Day is used to promote normalising HIV testing and affirming the rights and dignity of people living with HIV.
