International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Science needs women. The world needs science.

About

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed on February 11 to recognise the critical role women and girls play in science and technology. Despite progress, gender gaps persist across STEM fields — women remain underrepresented in research, academic leadership, and high-tech industries. The day highlights inspiring role models and calls for structural change.

History

The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2015, with the first celebration held on February 11, 2016. It is implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women in partnership with international institutions, with a new theme each year spotlighting challenges from equal access to education to fighting climate change.
