Global Handwashing Day

The simplest act of hygiene saves more lives than almost any medicine.

About

Global Handwashing Day on October 15 promotes the practice of washing hands with soap and water as one of the most effective and cost-efficient public health interventions available. Handwashing with soap can reduce diarrhoeal diseases by up to 47%, respiratory infections by up to 23%, and has been shown to be critical in reducing the transmission of a wide range of infectious diseases. Despite its simplicity, handwashing with soap is far from universal: 3 billion people worldwide lack basic handwashing facilities at home, and even where facilities exist, consistent practice is not guaranteed. The day targets schools, healthcare settings, and communities with practical training and behavioural messaging. The COVID-19 pandemic brought extraordinary global attention to hand hygiene — hand sanitiser became ubiquitous almost overnight — but the underlying infrastructure gaps that existed before the pandemic remain largely unaddressed.

History

Global Handwashing Day was established in 2008 by the Global Handwashing Partnership and has been observed annually on October 15 ever since. It was launched during the International Year of Sanitation, and the first Global Handwashing Day saw 120 million children in over 70 countries wash their hands simultaneously. UNICEF, the WHO, and the World Bank are among the day's key supporters.

Cultural Context

US United States

The US CDC consistently promotes handwashing as a core disease prevention measure. Global Handwashing Day is observed in schools and healthcare settings, and the day is used to reinforce proper technique — 20 seconds with soap — which studies show many people do not consistently practice.

KR South Korea

South Korea already had relatively high handwashing rates prior to COVID-19, and the pandemic reinforced these habits. The day is used to sustain that behaviour and to support international development programmes providing handwashing infrastructure in communities that lack it.

JP Japan

Japan has strong hygiene culture — hand sanitiser stations are common in public spaces. Global Handwashing Day reinforces existing good practice and extends educational messaging to children and to contexts like food preparation where handwashing discipline is especially critical.
